What Sets Stable Moments Apart from Other Mentorship Programs
May 13, 2025
There are plenty of mentorship programs with good intentions, but many lack the structure and training needed to truly support kids with trauma—sometimes doing more harm than good.
Where Most Mentorship Programs Fall Short:
- They’re built for the general population, or not a specific population.
- Mentors aren’t trained in trauma or how to respond to challenging behaviors.
- Sessions lack purpose, structure, and follow-through.
- Kids get matched with a well-meaning adult... but then what?
Too often, mentors are left wondering what to do, kids don’t receive consistent support, and just when a relationship is forming, the program ends or the mentor disappears. These kids don’t need more disruptions—they need healing relationships that last.
That’s where Stable Moments comes in.
Built Specifically for Kids with Developmental Trauma
At Stable Moments, we focus exclusively on children ages 3 to 17 who have experienced foster care, adoption, or early childhood trauma. Our entire model is designed for this population, and we don’t stretch it to include “all youth.” Why? Because serving a specific population means we can train mentors deeply and respond effectively.
Here’s What Sets Stable Moments Apart:
Trauma-Informed from the Start
- Every mentor completes a three-hour online trauma-informed training.
- They learn how trauma affects brain development, behavior, and emotional regulation.
- Mentors are equipped to build trust, reduce shame, and support healing—not just “hang out.”
Individualized Plans of Care for Every Child
- Each child gets a custom plan based on their strengths, challenges, and goals.
- Plans are created after a detailed intake conversation with the caregiver.
- Plans focus on six key life skill areas:
π Self-Worth
π΅ Responsibility
π΄ Self-Regulation
π Emotional Awareness
π Healthy Relationships
π Independence
Structured, Predictable Sessions
- Sessions are once a week, for 10 months—long enough to build real trust.
- Each session follows a clear format: Connection, Life Skill Development, Transition.
- Mentors use color-coded activity cards aligned with each child’s goals.
- This gives mentors clarity and makes sessions fun, intentional, and progress-driven.
Support for Mentors, Not Just Kids
- Mentors aren’t expected to be therapists—they’re given tools, structure, and backup.
- They complete session logs, reflect on their mentee’s progress, and get ongoing support from program staff.
- Mentors become part of a trauma-informed community that’s actually making a difference.
We Track Progress and Outcomes
- Caregivers complete pre- and post-assessments to measure growth in life skills.
- Mentors document progress through structured session logs.
- Program directors use this data to write progress summaries and show measurable impact.
A Model That Builds Community Buy-In
- One hour a week may seem small, but it adds up.
- Mentors become advocates. They share what they’ve learned. They recruit others.
- Over time, you build an army of trauma-informed adults who deeply understand the needs of foster and adopted youth.

Our Big Belief: Real Change Starts Small
Ending the foster care crisis starts with personal investment in individual children. If we can help one child believe they matter, if we can walk with them as they build trust, emotional awareness, and life skills—they’re more likely to transition into adulthood successfully. And if they do, their children may never enter the system. That’s the ripple effect.
One child. One hour a week. One life changed.
